The Ninth District Dental Society was formed in 1909 and renamed to the Ninth District Dental Association in 2002. We have a membership of over 1500 dentists in 5 counties: Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, Orange and Putnam.

In its quest to serve both the public and the profession, the Ninth District embodies the highest ideals.

Synopsis: Dental practitioners are in the position to recognize signs and symptoms of substance use disorder and contribute to its timely and appropriate management. In this presentation, illustrative examples of oral conditions caused by a variety of addictive substances are provided and the potential role of dental care providers in the prevention and management of oral and dental complications is emphasized. Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the pathogenesis and epidemiology of substance use disorder
  • Identify signs and symptoms of substance use disorder in the oral cavity
  • Describe the potential impact of addictive substances on oral health and provision of dental care
