Instructor: Victor M. Sternberg, D.M.D. –
Asst. Clinical Prof., Periodontics, Fairleigh Dickinson Univ. Dental School. Maintains a private practice limited to Periodontics, Briarcliff Manor, NY.

Synopsis: Implants have presented a viable alternative for tooth replacement, eliminating the need for many fixed bridges and partial dentures. However, the down side of this has been that teeth, which could be treated periodontally or endodontically, have been extracted.

This course will help provide the clinician with the tools to make the difficult decision about whether to retain or extract a natural tooth. Diagnostic x-rays, clinical evaluation and 3-D imaging are of great value in making critical diagnoses. Therapy, both non-surgical and surgical, can help turn around a periodontal condition and retain teeth for decades.

Distinguishing between endodontically-caused bone loss and periodontal bone loss is an important parameter for determining tooth retention. All too often, teeth are removed that could be endodontically treated.

The course will also discuss clinical presentations that will lead to a diagnosis, making long-term success unlikely. The course will provide you with the tools to help make these decisions in an evidence-based and accurate manner.
