ADA researchers to study antibiotic use as part of periodontal disease treatments

New trial is expected to have a major impact on reducing antibiotic misuse in dentistry

The ADA Science & Research Institute will collaborate with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to study the responsible use of antibiotics, along with other treatments, for periodontal disease, ADA News reported. The National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research is providing a $2.4 million grant for the study, which is expected to begin in spring 2023 and enroll 1,050 periodontal patients from US dental practices. "This new trial is expected to have a major impact on reducing antibiotic misuse in dentistry, which contributes to antibiotic resistance," said researcher Georgios Kotsakis, D.D.S., associate professor of periodontics at the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry.
