2024 COLA Dues Increase

July 19, 2023

To: Ninth District Membership (post on website)

From: Audit Budget Finance and Management Committee

The below resolution will be presented for vote at the Board of Governor's Tuesday, September 5, 2023 meeting at Primavera Restaurant, Croton Falls, NY.

Explanation:  Increases 2024 Ninth District Dental Association dues based on the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) of 3.5% for Active Members ($10).

Amendment AB 1-23 (Bd Resolution)

RESOLVED, that the Board approves a COLA increase of dues and recommends that Bylaws, Chapter III, Finances, line 23 of Section 1, be amended as follows: The dues of the Association for active members shall be $313 $303 per year…; and be it further

RESOLVED, that these amendments will be effective 2024.

[bold font new; strikeover deleted]

Background:  The last non-COLA dues increase for active members went into effect in 2020.  Membership is stagnant and our expenses have gone up considerably.  We are back to holding person events as we did before the pandemic to grow membership, and more new member initiatives will be planned, thus the cost of serving members will also increase substantially.  At a meeting of the Audit Budget Committee and 9th officers it was decided to seek the Board’s approval for a 2024 COLA dues increase of the 3.5% rate of inflation.

The Board’s authority to recommend a COLA dues increase is set forth on page 12 of the Bylaws, Chapter X, “Amendments,” #4 lines 1 thru 7 which reads:

4.         Dues amendments relating to cost of living increases.  The dues of the Association for active and active life members shall be increased as recommended by the Audit Budget Finance and Management Committee annually by a sum no greater than the rate of inflation and if passed by a two-thirds (2/3) affirmative vote of the Board of Governors present and voting.

5.         For the purposes of this section the “rate of inflation” shall be the annual percentage change in the U.S. Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index – All Urban Consumers (CPI_U): Selected area, all items index – Selected local areas - New York, as of the preceding May 31.
