The Ninth District Dental Society was formed in 1909 and renamed to the Ninth District Dental Association in 2002. We have a membership of over 1500 dentists in 5 counties: Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, Orange and Putnam.

In its quest to serve both the public and the profession, the Ninth District embodies the highest ideals.

The mission of the 9th District Dental Association is to serve and support its members and the public by improving the oral health of our community through Advocacy, Continuing Education and Camaraderie.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has issued its Clinical Decision Support Innovation Collaborative (CDSiC) newsletter.

In this edition of The Insider, we highlight four new AHRQ CDSiC-developed resources focused on cutting-edge patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) topics, including the collection and standardization of patient preferences data and real-world PC CDS implementation and reporting. We also share a new Leadership Viewpoint piece on new directions for the field, as well as several upcoming conference presentations.

In real-world settings, stakeholders can encounter barriers to realizing the benefits of PC CDS. Recognizing the value of learning from others' implementation experiences, the AHRQ CDSiC's Implementation, Adoption, and Scaling Workgroup developed a new case studies report that shares insights from nine AHRQ-funded PC CDS projects. The report provides practical guidance across four key domains: patient engagement, implementation, adoption, and scaling.

By addressing challenges in patient engagement, data interoperability, and user acceptance, PC CDS stakeholders can use this report to accelerate the integration of PC CDS into clinical practice. Read the full report here!
Patient preferences provide the basis for how patients wish to interact with their clinician, share their personal data, or choose a particular course of action for their care. Patient preference information, when it is collected, is often saved as unstructured data in electronic health records and thus may not be used by clinicians or in digital health tools to inform patient care. 

Since standardizing patient preference information can advance the incorporation of these data into PC CDS tools, the AHRQ CDSiC Standards and Regulatory Frameworks Workgroup conducted a multistakeholder roundtable discussion and key informant interviews to identify key themes related to the routine collection of patient preferences, patient information that should be prioritized for standardization, and challenges with standardizing this information.
The consideration of patient preferences in healthcare decision making can enhance patient satisfaction and improve health outcomes. Integrating patient preferences into PC CDS tools is one key method to support the use of this important data.

To support this goal, the AHRQ CDSiC's Trust and Patient-Centeredness Workgroup produced a report that identifies opportunities to improve the collection and integration of patient preferences into PC CDS. The report visualizes patient lifeflows and clinical workflows for capturing patient preference data and offers considerations to reduce patient and clinician burden. Read the full report here!
Patient involvement in PC CDS design and implementation is often missing from existing CDS guides. To address this gap, the AHRQ CDSiC's Measurement and Outcomes Workgroup developed a fillable tool and accompanying guide intended to support PC CDS researchers in engaging patients and describing how PC CDS is designed, developed, deployed, used, maintained, and evaluated.

The guide is organized into four key sections: 1) planning and needs assessment; 2) design and development; 3) implementation and adoption; and 4) evaluation, maintenance, and sustainability. Research teams can use this user guide and tool during and after implementation of PC CDS to produce a comprehensive report describing their work, which can help others replicate implementation successes and contribute to efforts to synthesize best practices across efforts.

In May 2024, over 85 PC CDS stakeholders attended the second CDSiC Annual Meeting to share and discuss efforts to advance PC CDS. Participants shared insights on critical areas of exploration for the PC CDS field throughout the meeting, which are summarized in a new Leadership Viewpoint piece. The piece shares four key themes drawn from the meeting: 1) advancing PC CDS through real-world projects; 2) exploring new topics to promote meaningful patient engagement; 3) building a value proposition for PC CDS; and 4) understanding how PC CDS can leverage AI and maintain trust.

The work of the AHRQ CDSiC will be showcased in a panel, podium presentation, and two posters at the upcoming AMIA Annual Symposium taking place in San Francisco, CA from November 9-13. On October 28, AHRQ CDSiC Stakeholder Center lead Priyanka Desai will give an AHRQ CDSiC-focused presentation at the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM) Annual Meeting in Boston, MA. The talk will present key findings from the AHRQ CDSiC report Patient and Caregiver Perspectives on Generative Artificial Intelligence in Patient-Centered Clinical Decision Support.

The 2024 Mobilizing Computable Biomedical Knowledge (MCBK) Global Meeting will take place virtually on October 23, 2024. The meeting will focus on exploring generative AI, including the role generative AI can play in improving human health by mobilizing computable knowledge around the world.

Landscape Assessment on the Use of Artificial Intelligence to Scale PC CDS

Developed by the AHRQ CDSiC’s Implementation, Adoption, and Scaling Workgroup, this report provides an overview of current approaches for using artificial intelligence to scale PC CDS, outlines existing challenges, and highlights promising practices to ensure patient safety and privacy.
An Initial Taxonomy of Override Reasons for PC CDS Recommendations

Developed by the AHRQ CDSiC's CDS Standards and Regulatory Frameworks Workgroup, this report provides a framework for analyzing PC CDS overrides to support improvements in PC CDS to ensure that it is delivered at the right time, for the right patients and clinicians, and that it conveys clinically valuable and actionable information to inform shared decision making.
Patient Prioritization of Measurement Areas for Patient-Centered Clinical Decision Support

Developed by the AHRQ CDSiC's Measurement and Outcomes Workgroup, this report highlights which patient health journey measurement areas should be prioritized.
 
The Clinical Decision Support Innovation Collaborative (CDSiC) is a community of broad, diverse stakeholders at the forefront of using technology to better support care teams, patients, and caregivers. The CDSiC is working toward healthcare decisions that are driven by both patient-centered and patient-specific information and that align with patient needs, preferences, and values. The CDSiC is funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) as part of a multi-component initiative to help advance patient-centered outcomes research into practice through CDS.
