The Ninth District Dental Society was formed in 1909 and renamed to the Ninth District Dental Association in 2002. We have a membership of over 1500 dentists in 5 counties: Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, Orange and Putnam.

In its quest to serve both the public and the profession, the Ninth District embodies the highest ideals.

Completed her Oral Medicine fellowship and MSD degree at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine where she holds a faculty appointment as a professor of Oral Medicine and as an attending at the University hospital. Dr. Fatahzadeh is a diplomat of American Board of Oral Medicine and director of pre and post-doctoral oral medicine training and Oral Mucosal Diseases Clinic at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.

Course Objectives

Oral cavity is readily accessible for inspection and a gateway for assessment of general health. In fact, many systemic conditions affecting organs far from the head and neck region could manifest in the orofacial region, sometimes prior to their diagnosis. Abnormalities detected in the orofacial region may also represent complications related to medical therapy or raise concerns about substance abuse. This program provides illustrative examples of orofacial findings associated with diagnosed or subjectively silent systemic disease, medical therapy and substance abuse. Relevant signs, symptoms, and diagnostics are reviewed and the potential role of oral health care providers in recognition, referral, follow-up and overall management is emphasized.

NYSED Issues Alert on Dental Sleep Apnea Practice

Per the notice below, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has issued guidance that significantly limits dentists and dental hygienists from engaging in sleep apnea practice. Sleep Apnea Practice Alert

Pursuant to Education Law §6601, the practice of dentistry includes, among other things, the prescribing and fabrication of dental prostheses and appliances. Thus, a dentist may fabricate an intra-oral sleep disorder appliance only following a definitive diagnosis by a licensed physician and a patient specific order. However, administering sleep apnea tests in the dental office or giving at home tests are not within the scope of practice of a dentist and/or dental hygienist.

Furthermore, under Education Law §§6604-A(4) and 6609-A(4), acceptable formal continuing education for dentists and dental hygienists shall mean formal programs of learning which contributes to professional practice and which meet the standards prescribed by the Commissioner’s regulations. Sleep medicine is not a recognized dental specialty in New York State. Therefore, in order to use course work in sleep medicine to meet mandatory continuing education requirements for dentists and dental hygienists, the course must address content relative to fabrication of intra-oral sleep disorder appliances and care/maintenance of the oral appliances.
