The New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) has been closely monitoring the ongoing public discourse surrounding Int. No. 1379, a bill that proposes removing fluoride from New York City’s municipal drinking water and dismantling one of the most significant public health achievements of the past century.

Last week’s City & State NY article is one of only a few published pieces, but we expect there will be more.

NYSDA has submitted a formal letter of opposition and stands firmly against this bill. Water fluoridation is a safe, effective and scientifically backed public health achievement that has been proven to reduce tooth decay by 25–30% across populations. It is endorsed and supported by over 100 health organizations, including the American Dental Association and NYSDA.

While we acknowledge that Council Member James Gennaro’s bill includes a provision to offer fluoride supplements upon request, this approach is neither equitable nor practical. Community water fluoridation remains the most accessible, cost-effective and inclusive method of delivering these health benefits. Replacing fluoride with a supplement program would only exacerbate oral health disparities, particularly in underserved communities.

NYSDA, alongside our lobbyist and legal counsel, will continue to advocate strongly for maintaining fluoridation in New York's drinking water and to educate the public about its safety and importance at the recommended level of 0.7 mg/L.

We urge our members to reject this bill and stand with the scientific community, the healthcare sector and the residents of New York City.
