CDT codes you should know for 2026

Nov 19, 2025

CDT 2026 includes 60 changes, including 14 revisions

...

CDT 2026 boasts 60 code changes, including 14 revisions.

Below is information to help prepare dentists to use a few of these revised codes come Jan. 1, 2026. The exact descriptors are available in CDT 2026.

D2391 resin-based composite — one surface, posterior
The descriptor for this code, which had limited its application to restorations penetrating into dentin, was deleted. Eliminating the descriptor that specified the carious lesion’s status will allow dental professionals to accurately document and report one-surface resin-based composite restorations, regardless of lesion depth or diagnosis. Notably, no other restorative code is defined or restricted by the depth of the lesion, exposing inconsistency with how similar procedures are coded. This code revision is also related to the deletion of code D1352 preventive resin restoration in a moderate to high caries risk patient — permanent tooth. It was determined that the procedure is done the same way for both codes and having one code leads to less confusion when documenting.

D9230 administration of nitrous oxide
The D9230 nomenclature and descriptor were revised to eliminate outdated language and bring clarity and simplicity to this code. The descriptor now specifies that this code is used to document and report the administration of nitrous oxide when it is delivered as a single agent. This change is part of sweeping revisions to anesthesia codes in CDT 2026.

D5876 add metal substructure to acrylic complete denture — per arch
This code was revised to clarify the nature and scope of this procedure. It is used to document and report the addition of a metal substructure in a removable complete denture for reinforcement during fabrication or repair.

The CDT 2026 and Coding Companion Kit and Consumer-Friendly CDT 2026: Plain Language Terms for Patient Communication are available for purchase at ADAStore.org.

For the first time, the ADA is also offering a continuing education series to explain some of the changes coming to CDT 2026. The 2026 CDT Codes: Clinical Practice Series includes eight on-demand courses that give a comprehensive look into the structure, maintenance and ongoing updates of CDT codes. The eight courses can be purchased individually or as a bundle at ADAStore.org.

Visit ADA.org/CDT for more information on the CDT Code.
