This Year's Theme is 'Ready. Set. Action!'
The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) celebrates National Public Health Week (April 6 -12) by reaffirming its commitment to promote the health and wellbeing of all New Yorkers. Governor Kathy Hochul issued a proclamation recognizing the week, building on her commitment to advancing public health initiatives, including expanding access to care, addressing health disparities, strengthening emergency preparedness, and investing in programs that support mental health and community wellness. This year's theme, "Ready. Set. Action!" celebrates how public health improves daily life, safeguards families, extends life spans, and strengthens communities.
"Thank you, Governor Hochul, for your leadership and commitment to highlighting the importance of public health which is about protecting and uplifting our communities," State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. "This week, we recognize the dedicated professionals working every day to keep New Yorkers healthy and recommit to ensuring that everyone has a fair shot at a healthy and fulfilling life no matter their race or where they live."
Governor Hochul has positioned New York as a public health leader through groundbreaking statewide initiatives, record level investments, and national collaborative efforts. Her 2026 agenda furthers this commitment and includes initiatives that aim to protect public health.
Access to Vaccines
To keep New Yorkers safe and protect their wallets, Governor Hochul has advanced legislation allowing New York to set its own immunization standards based on accepted medical science and public health needs. The proposal would authorize the Health Commissioner, in consultation with recognized medical organizations, to establish immunization requirements that guide school eligibility, clinical practice, and insurance coverage. This approach will provide clarity for providers and insurers, protect access to vaccines, and strengthen public health across the state.
Protecting Access to Care
Governor Hochul Secured federal approval to restructure the Essential Plan lowering income eligibility from 250 percent to 200 percent of the federal poverty line, effective July 1, 2026. This action preserves premium-free coverage for 1.3 million New Yorkers. The restructuring is in response to significant federal health funding cuts to the state. Governor Hochul is committed to helping impacted individuals find the most affordable coverage available.
Scope of Practice
Governor Hochul has also proposed legislation to expand the scope of practice for several critical healthcare workers, improving access for patients. This includes allowing certified medication assistants to administer medication in nursing homes, physician assistants with sufficient training to practice independently, and medical assistants to administer vaccinations. This will greatly contribute to addressing health care workforce challenges in hospitals and will help increase timely access to primary care providers, particularly in rural New York.
Governors Public Health Alliance
Last year, Governor Hochul joined 14 other governors to launch this nonpartisan alliance that provides a platform for governors to exchange best practices, align policies, and coordinate on issues like vaccine access, emergency response, and health security.
Nationally Recognized Leader in Mental Health
Last month, Governor Hochul was recognized by Mental Health America for expanding access to mental health throughout New York State. Mental Health America presented her with the 2026 Governor's Leadership Award, recognizing the 'significant and sustained investments' that have strengthened mental health systems across the state's continuum of care.
Food Security in New York
Governor Hochul is announcing an additional investment in the Department of Health's Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP). This funding will help food banks stay operational and reach more New Yorkers in need by supporting approximately 2,700 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters participating in the program. In addition, the Governor will launch New York PLATES (Providing Local Access to Essential Sustenance), a statewide competitive grant program for eligible food pantries across the state's 10 regional food bank territories.
