CMS Issues Open Payments Data

Jun 30, 2026

CMS Publishes Program Year 2025 Open Payments Data

Today, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published Open Payments Program Year 2025 data, along with newly submitted and updated payment records for Program Years 2019 – 2024.  The data is accessible on the Open Payments Search Tool.  Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes transparency and accountability by making information about the financial relationships between pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers and distributors and certain health care providers available to the public.  Through Open Payments, the American public can explore payments and other transfers of value their healthcare providers receive from pharmaceutical and medical device companies.

Drug and medical device companies are required by law to report certain financial relationships through the Open Payments program.  Healthcare providers may voluntarily review, affirm, or if necessary, dispute information reported about them.

Program Year 2025 Highlights

For Program Year 2025, CMS published $14.67 billion in payments and ownership and investment interests reported by applicable manufacturers and distributors about physicians (including dentists), non-physician practitioners (physician assistants, advanced practice nurses), and teaching hospitals.  The published data includes 17.07 million records attributable to:

  • 667,898 physicians (including dentists)
  • 362,261 non-physician practitioners (NPPs)
  • 1,327 teaching hospitals

Payments are reported in three categories: general payments, research payments, and ownership or investment interests.  For Program Year 2025 this includes:

  • $3.92 billion in general payments (i.e., non-research related)
  • $9.50 billion in research payments
  • $1.25 billion of ownership or investment interests held by physicians or their immediate family members in the reporting entities.

In total, the searchable Open Payments data includes 93.97 million records amounting to $82.24 billion in reported payments and ownership or investment interests.

The Open Payments data will be refreshed in early 2027 to reflect any updates made to the data through December 31, 2026.  To explore the data, visit the Open Payments Search Tool.  Archived Open Payments data is available on the Archived Datasets page.  While the archived datasets are not searchable on the Open Payments search tool, they remain publicly available in a downloadable format.

Additional Information

New!  Reporting Entity Audit Resource Document

The Open Payments team is pleased to announce the release of a new Audit Resource document for reporting entities.  This resource includes:

  • information about the Open Payments’ audit process,
  • frequently asked questions about the audit process,
  • recommendations to help reporting entities prepare for and streamline audits.

Covered Recipient Post Publication Review and Dispute Availability

Covered recipients may review and affirm, or dispute, records in the Open Payments System (OPS) through December 31, 2026.  Updates made during this period will be reflected in the next annual data refresh or in a later publication.  To participate in review and dispute activities, covered recipients must be registered in the Open Payments System.  For more information about registration and the review and dispute process visit the Open Payments Covered Recipients page.
