ONC Issues New Quarterly Report

Jun 30, 2026

INAUGURAL ISSUE · JUNE 2026

Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC)

Coordinator's
Quarterly

The Coordinator’s Quarterly, a new publication from ONC, will provide critical information and updates on ONC policies and activities from the previous quarter, along with research findings.  This quarter we celebrate incredible success – EHRs have been universally adopted across the healthcare ecosystem.

LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVES

Messages from Leadership

Reflections on health IT's most consequential milestone — and what comes next.

Tom Keane

National Coordinator for Health IT

Welcome to the inaugural Coordinator’s Quarterly!  This publication will provide critical information and updates on ONC policies and activities from the previous quarter, along with research findings that help shape our decisions.  At its core, this publication is about how health data policies show up in exam rooms, pharmacies, hospitals, and kitchen tables across the country.  Read Tom's Full Message →

Steven Posnack

Principal Deputy National
Coordinator for Health IT

We did not reach the EHR adoption levels we have today by accident.  It took presidential leadership, congressional action, federal rulemaking, private-sector investment, standards development, state and local implementation, and the daily resilience of clinicians and health professionals who had to change how care was documented and delivered.  Read Steve's Full Message →

New & Notable

New data briefs from ONC highlight what health IT adoption looks like now, and where we still need to go.

Non-Federal Acute Care Hospital Electronic Health Record Adoption (2008-2024)

Our recent data brief uses nationally representative survey data from the American Hospital Association (AHA) IT Supplement to examine trends in hospital EHR adoption, how adoption varied by hospital characteristics, developer market share, and EHR use across inpatient and outpatient settings from 2008 through 2024.  Read Data Brief

Office-based Physician Electronic Health Record Adoption (2008-2024)

In the wake of HITECH investment, EHR adoption among office-based physicians has ramped up from a period of steady growth to now nearly ubiquitous adoption.  Our recent data brief provides a deeper analysis than ever before of how HITECH investment in physician EHR adoption is progressing, leveraging the latest adoption data collected in 2024 as part of the National EHR Survey (NEHRS).  Read Data Brief

Trends in Health Information Organizations’ Experiences of Perceived Information Blocking (2019-2025)

We examined survey data from state, local, and regional health information organizations to analyze HIOs’ experiences with how other entities, like hospitals and health systems or developers of certified health IT, may have engaged in potential information blocking.  Our data brief provides additional context and understanding of the variation in behaviors that cause friction in the exchange of electronic health information.  Read Data Brief

Health Information Exchange Organization Capabilities to Support Public Health Data Exchange

State, local, and regional health information organizations (HIOs) can play an important role in promoting public health data exchange by facilitating the flow of information between health care providers and public health agencies (PHAs).  Our recent data brief examines data on 76 HIOs from the 2025 National Survey of Health Information Organizations to assess the current state of HIO connectivity to PHAs and the types of services offered to support public health reporting and other core PHA responsibilities.  Read Data Brief
