Changes accepted by Code Maintenance Committee will go into effect Jan. 1, 2028

Code change requests for CDT 2028 are due by Nov. 1.

While parties can submit requests at any time to add, revise or delete codes, submissions made after that date will be addressed in the next annual maintenance cycle.

Anyone — including dentists, office staff, individuals with an interest in dental coding, professional organizations and companies — may submit a request by filling out the official form at ADA.org/CDT and emailing it to dentalcode@ada.org. Forms with errors or omissions will be returned for correction.

The Code Maintenance Committee will meet March 4-5, 2027, to take action on change requests, and submitters will be notified of the committee’s decisions by April. Accepted changes will then appear in CDT 2028 and go into effect Jan. 1, 2028.

Examples of reasons to request a new code include a new procedure that does not fit an existing code, technology or materials that have changed, or the need for better accuracy for documentation and claims processing. According to the ADA, strong requests include:

• A clear procedure description.
• Supporting evidence or documentation.
• An explanation of how the new code would differ from existing codes.
• A rationale for why it’s needed.
