Synopsis:  In clinical practice, we regularly contend with the urgent/emergent needs of osteoporotic patients who are receiving antiresorptive medications or osteoanabolic agents which increase risk of surgical complications and introduce potential for MRONJ. Simultaneously, we interact with osteopenic patients who are uncertain where to obtain veritable self-help resources to thwart further bone loss. As dentists and integral members of our patient’s care team, they turn to us expecting well-informed, communicative, seamlessly coordinated, judicious care.

This lecture will provide updated information and valuable resources for you to use when sharing decision-making with osteoporotic and osteopenic patients including:
1. Identifying at-risk patients and the proposition for earlier screening/detection.
2. Review of current medication protocols and the rising interest in alternative options through lifestyle/functional medicine.
3. Pre-operative patient optimization and risk assessment.
4. Medicolegal considerations of treating osteoporotic and osteopenic patients with urgent/emergent needs.
5. Bone health and osteoporosis resources, prevention strategies, and ongoing clinical trials.
