"Orofacial Manifestations of Systemic Diseases"

Course Objectives

Oral cavity is readily accessible for inspection and a gateway for assessment of general health. In fact, many systemic conditions affecting organs far from the head and neck region could manifest in the orofacial region, sometimes prior to their diagnosis. Abnormalities detected in the orofacial region may also represent complications related to medical therapy or raise concerns about substance abuse. This program provides illustrative examples of orofacial findings associated with diagnosed or subjectively silent systemic disease, medical therapy and substance abuse. Relevant signs, symptoms, and diagnostics are reviewed and the potential role of oral health care providers in recognition, referral, follow-up and overall management is emphasized.

FDA Launches New Resources on "Home as a Health Care Hub" Initiative

Jun 20, 2024

Per the notice below, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched new resources on its "Home as a Health Care Hub" initiative.

FDA Advances Health Equity Initiative: Home as a Health Care Hub

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to advance the Home as a Health Care Hub initiative with new ways to share progress, answer questions, and receive feedback from stakeholders.  Today, the FDA is announcing a new Web page and virtual public meeting dedicated to this health equity initiative.  The new Web page offers more detail about the initiative’s goals and background.  It answers frequently asked questions, and it’s where we’ll share our progress.  A virtual public meeting on the initiative will provide information, seek input from stakeholders, and start a dialogue about barriers and opportunities associated with making the home part of the health care system.  Important information for the virtual public meeting:

  • Date: July 25, 2024
  • Time: 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET
  • Registration deadline: July 25, 2024, at 11 a.m. ET
  • To speak at the virtual public meeting: express your interest by noon, July 12, 2024, following the instructions on the meeting Web page.

Background

Introduced in April 2024, the Home as a Health Care Hub initiative reimagines the home as an integral part of the health care system with the goal of advancing health equity for all people in the U.S.  FDA contracted with an architectural firm to develop virtual reality prototypes of the home that will serve as an idea lab.  These prototypes will:
  • help find new ways to connect populations most affected by health disparities to health care, and
  • assist medical device developers, policy makers, and providers as they begin developing home-based solutions that advance health equity.

If you have questions about the Home as a Health Care Hub initiative, contact HealthHomeHub@fda.hhs.gov.
